About Medicines for Humanity

Founded in 1997, Medicines for Humanity (MFH) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with the mission of reaching the world’s most vulnerable children with effective life-saving health services in order to reduce the mortality rate of children under 5 years old. MFH works to increase the capacity of its in-country partners to support and provide services for clinics and communities with nutrition, perinatal, water and sanitation initiatives. We train staff and volunteers to recognize, refer and treat children; transform community health through education and innovation; support provision of medicines and equipment and monitor progress and results to ensure positive outcomes. MFH leverages every dollar donated to make the greatest life-saving impact possible.

MFH projects focus on the most vulnerable children under 5 years old and pregnant women. One of the most effective ways MFH has accomplished our mission is through partnerships with Catholic Congregations of Women Religious (CWRs), who are already serving the communities where many of these vulnerable children reside in various capacities. We support and build the capacity of the CWRs to initiate or expand the use of evidence-based interventions to enable children to survive and thrive. We have extensive and successful project experience working with CWRs on the ground in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Our assistance facilitates a concrete understanding of the environment – health, economic, social and cultural - in order to identify the major causes of child mortality in a particular area. Then, working in tandem with local partners, we strengthen health services, improve access to those services, provide training and supervisory support to various healthcare cadres, drive community engagement on health issues, and integrate clinical efforts with community outreach.

Many of the communities we have served with our in-country partners have seen a significant reduction in child mortality rates. The dedication of our partners, along with the strategic approach MFH utilizes to maintain a core focus on MCH, build healthcare provider and caregiver capacity, as well as support ongoing efforts and drive long-term sustainability is key to our demonstrated success. We track what we call Critically Needed Health Services, which are proven life-saving services. In our most recent fiscal year (2016), MFH-supported programs provided over one million critically needed health services to children under age 5 and pregnant women.
